Bulgaria, or the Republic of Bulgaria, to give the country its official
title, occupies nearly 43,000 square miles of the Balkan Peninsula, in
south eastern Europe. The country is bordered by Romania, to the
north, Greece and Turkey, to the south, the Black Sea, to the east, and
Serbia and Macedonia to the west. The geographical relief of Bulgaria is
extremely varied, with lowland regions in the north and south east, but
with the Balkan Mountains traversing the country for east to west, the
Rhodope Mountains running along its southern border, with Greece, and
the Pirin and Rila mountain ranges in the south west. The climate in
Bulgaria can be described as temperate continental; seasons are well
defined, with average annual temperatures of 10.5 degrees Celsius, in the
country as a whole, and a distinct Mediterranean influence in the southern
parts.
About Pamporovo
Pamporovo is one of the best known mountain resorts in Bulgaria, and,
indeed, is one of the most southerly skiing resorts in Europe. Pamporovo
is situated at an altitude of 1650 metres, or just over 5,400 feet, in
the Rhodope, or Rodopi (in Bulgarian), Mountains. The highest peak in
the region is Snejanka, at a height of just over 1,900 metres, or 6,200
feet; despite the altitude, and the presence of snow for between 150
and 200 days of the year, the climate here is surprisingly mild, with an
average annual temperature of 8.5 degrees Celsius.
Pamporovo Ski School is renowned, internationally, for the quality of
instruction – in skiing and snowboarding – provided by experienced,
English speaking instructors. The Ski School is located just a few minutes
from the centre of Pamporo, in close proximity to the nursery slopes.
Skiing and snowboarding lessons take place for four hours a day, six
days a week. Once you are ready for more of a challenge, or are already an
intermediate level skier, or snowboarder, you can take a chairlift up
to the top of Snejanka peak, where 20km, or 12 miles, of suitable ski
runs await. For the ultimate challenge – for advanced level skiers and
snowboarders – you can take a drag lift to `The Wall`, the most
demanding run in the resort, or the slightly less demanding, but nevertheless
difficult, `Snejanka` piste.
Whatever your level of ability, you will find that ski runs in Pamprovo
are well maintained, and in good condition. The resort is also well
served by a network of ski lifts – 5 chair, and 9 drag, lifts – providing
fast and comfortable access to the ski runs, without overcrowding, or
excessive queuing. Equipment rental is also available close to the ski
runs.
Property in Bulgaria
Property in Bulgarian ski resorts – principally in the form of ski chalets
and apartments – has become increasing popular in recent years, and the
importance of Pamporovo as a tourist area has not gone unnoticed by the
Bulgarian authorities, and foreign property investors, alike. Pamprovo
has a reputation for excellent skiing, and guaranteed snowfall, because
of its altitude. Building restrictions mean that little further
residential construction will be allowed, and a development programme –
including a new airport, road link, and significant enhancements to skiing
facilities – suggests that capital appreciation of property in
Pamporovo, along with rental income, is only likely to increase in the future.
