The Pirin Mountains attract hikers and mountain bikers, with its jagged peaks, fulgent glacial mountain lakes, varieties of rare plants, including edelweiss and the remarkable Baikusheva fir, almost 1300 years old, and the atmosphere of ancient towns and monasteries.
Pirin Mountains, named after the Thunder God Perun, are the Bulgaria's wildest mountains with lots of protected areas and no less than 60 peaks over 2500 meters high. Generally the terrain is alpine, meaning that most of the trekking is done above the tree zone. Hikers pass by stupendous views of crystal-clear mountain lakes, green dales exotic rock formations and rich animal life.
